As a amateur teller of stories myself and with the limited information provided, I'd say that depends on your approach to storytelling:
- If you have a tendency to change/update a lot of things while finalizing the story then do whatever seems the most fitting by the time you get to the end.
- If you have a set plan that you deviate from only in minor details, go with what better fits the mood.

Newgrounds also has a forum for writers where you could get 'way' better feedback than from a news post that next to nobody sees - but of course you would need to share a bit of your story to give the writers there something to work with...

After having a quick glance at your art I wouldn't say you draw with the expressed goal of pleasing the mainstream. So the "more people" approach might be a bit flawed. ;)

I'm not saying you 'shouldn't' do happy endings - just that you shouldn't commit to an option because you think that's what the audience wants. More often than not, consumers of art did not really know what they want before it was given to them.

Slight spoilers ahead: The movie 'Se7en' (1995) did not have a happy ending, and despite numerous flaws, it was very well received at the time.
